🎣 Corpus Christi Bay Area Fishing Report – June
Summer is here, and the fishing is heating up right along with the water temperatures. June is one of the most productive months for inshore fishing on the Texas Coast, and Corpus Christi Bay is showing off this year with excellent activity across the board.
🎯 What’s Biting
Speckled Trout
Trout fishing is in full swing, with good numbers and quality-size fish being caught across the bay system. Early mornings and late evenings are best, especially as temperatures rise during the day. Live croaker has been the top producer on deeper grass flats and near drop-offs, but savvy anglers are also having success with topwater plugs like Super Spooks and She Dogs during the first hour of light. Soft plastics on light jigheads are working well when fished slow around potholes and edges of channel cuts.
Redfish (Red Drum)
Redfish are feeding aggressively this month, and the action has been consistent in shallow water. Look for tails and wakes along grass lines, sand pockets, and shoreline edges during calm mornings. Paddletail soft plastics, gold spoons, and shrimp under popping corks have all been effective. Sight casting is prime in clear water areas like Shamrock Cove, Deadman’s Island, and the back lakes of Mustang Island. Larger slot and upper-slot reds have also been schooling near spoil islands during tidal movement.
Flounder
Flounder are making a solid showing along sandy drop-offs, creek mouths, and marsh drains. These ambush predators are biting best on soft plastics like Gulp! Swimming Mullet and live mud minnows slow-bounced along the bottom. The bite tends to pick up during moving tides and overcast conditions. Areas with mixed shell and sand bottom near Aransas Pass and Packery Channel are holding solid numbers.
🌊 Water Conditions & Strategy
-
Water Temperature: Low to mid 80s
-
Clarity: Generally good, especially in protected back bays and around grassy flats
-
Best Times: First two hours of daylight and last two before sunset
-
Best Tides: Outgoing tides near mid-morning and early afternoon have been triggering bites
June fishing requires adjusting to midday heat, so getting out early or fishing into the evening pays off. Wind conditions have been variable, so protected shorelines and leeward banks offer better opportunities for both boat and wade anglers.
📍 Hot Spots This Month
-
Laguna Madre Grass Flats – Speckled trout early on topwaters, then switching to croaker in deeper troughs
-
Shamrock Cove – Sight casting reds in clear water pockets; great on calmer mornings
-
Boat Hole & Corpus Christi Ship Channel edges – Mixed bag of trout, redfish, and black drum on live shrimp
-
Packery Channel & adjacent flats – Flounder and slot reds on soft plastics and finger mullet
-
Oso Bay Shoreline – Ideal for wade fishing or shore casting, especially for black drum and redfish using shrimp
🧠 Captain’s Tip for June
"Watch the bait. If you see mullet jumping or slicks forming, there’s something feeding. Slow down, make deliberate casts, and you’ll get hooked up. And don’t forget: June can bring midday lulls, so either beat the sun or plan to fish the tide windows hard."
